You just inherited $1,000,000 from an aunt you didn’t even know existed. What’s the first thing you buy (or otherwise use the money for)?
It was just like any other day in Dhaka city. I was working on my laptop and enjoying my coffee. And the doorbell rang. Nobody usually comes to my apartment unless it’s my boyfriend but at this early morning it was sure not him. I wrapped around my robe and went for the door. Two men in black suits and briefcase in one’s hand staring at me with enigmatic looks. That was not the only surprise for me in the morning. One of them handed me over a letter. I don’t know why but, the tiny piece of paper felt really heavy. I was afraid to find out something too bad in it. The letter was written long time ago by a woman named Samiyah. I could not reckon her name. I looked at those two men; they were still staring at me as if they were waiting for me to finish reading quickly. I read the letter. Not once, not twice. I read it 5 times and still couldn’t believe what it said.
The lady was my mother’s sister. All these years I knew she was the only child of my grandparents. I should have been happy but I was not. Tears were dropping down my eyes. The moment I found out about her I came to know that she was no more. One the men explained to me that before she died she signed a will to give all her money to me. ME!!! I mean, why me?? They handed me some official papers to sign and a cheque which says$1,000,000.
After those handsomely suited men left, I started screaming loud, jumping on my bed, singing crazy songs that didn’t make any sense. I was in cloud nine. $ 1,000,000 is BDT 77,630,000. What would I do with all these precious money? Funny but true, I made a loooong list of “what to buy”.
After a week when I looked around myself I felt accomplished. It was like I bought my dreams in real life. The first thing I bought was my own apartment of 3000 sq ft. Decorated it just as I wished for. Bought a new car. And launched my own boutique shop. Finally, life seems to go in the right direction. If it wasn’t aunt Samiyah, my life would have been just the same as it was a week earlier. She made me believe that dream does comes true if you truly believe in it.
